Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a doula if I am having a planned cesarean?Delivering a baby involves strong emotions. Having a baby via cesarean can be in some ways be even more emotional than a natural delivery because of the added strain of a sterile, surgical process. A doula can help provide the support and reassurance that parents need during this time. We can help the mother emotionally during the surgery, keeping her informed throughout the process (providing the hospital and physician consent), and stay with her while her partner visits the baby in the nursery. We can also be available for postnatal visits to facilitate the process of bringing your new baby home.
What does the father/partner do if I have a doula?Sometimes fathers and partners worry that having a doula will take away from their role. We recognize, encourage and respect the valuable role that fathers and partners play during the birth process.
Does a doula replace nursing staff? No, doulas do not replace nursing staff. Doulas do not perform clinical or medical tasks. They are there to comfort and support the mother and to enhance communication between the parents and the medical staff.
What if my doula can't make it to my birth?Because we are a team, you can rest assured that one of us can always be at your birth.
